Good Vibes at “Vibe”

Last night the South Tyneside Democracy Forum organised and held its first fund raising function. Followers of local politics are all well aware of the legal bill which South Tyneside Council have forced on Ahmed Khan for having the audacity to challenge the local election result in the Beacon and Bents Ward in May 2007. As a result of this injustice, supporters of Mr Khan’s challenge launched a public subscription campaign to try and alleviate the court costs he has been forced to pay.

With the organisational help of the STDF, the campaign was launched in full at the “Vibe” club and bar in South Shields town centre. The night involved a quiz, a “ballot box” treasure hunt, 2 singers and numerous raffles (such was the support and volume of donations, it took 45 minutes to award the prizes).

About 150 people were present – everybody knew why they were there and everybody was happy to support Mr Khan’s cause. They also all had a good night, and combined with the aims of the campaign, the whole thing was a great success.

If the Council thought the matter of the missing ballot boxes would disappear, they are very wrong. For those there on the night, the issue is still in the forefront of their minds.

Unbelievable support to say I was overwhelmed would be an understatement.

I would like to place on record my thanks to everyone that attended and contributed to the event to make it such a great success.

Finally, I would also like to thank South Tyneside Democracy Forum for organising the evening and look forward to many more enjoyable evenings in the future.
