WPC'S TRINNY AND TRANNY

Today’s Gazette highlights the fact that South Tyneside police are going to get a uniform “make over”, with standard shirts and trousers being replaced by zipped collar shirts and combat pants. Whilst this may sound a bit “paramilitary”, it has been coming for some time. With a brother in the Met Force, one of his standard complaints is the impracticality of the current uniform when chasing wags down streets and over fences.

With the uniform only being worn by those who regularly wear body armour, which lets face it, in urban areas is virtually all of them, the image of riot style police permanently dressed this way is a little disturbing. So is the cost, estimated to be £200,000, which will have to come out of existing budgets. However, if it makes policing easier, who are we to argue when it comes to what’s stylish and what’s not.

Mind you, with a 200K bill, the pants obviously aren’t from Primark!
