No, not councillor allowances, but the small matter of civil servant redundancy payments.
The Gordon Brown driven efficiency drive for the Civil Service has so far cost 7717 jobs with goodbye cheques to the value of £432 million. One single payment of £612,000 was given to civil servant John Oughton, aged only 54, who took early retirement. Mr Oughton’s job was err…….to oversee the details of the redundancy programme.
Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson, Lord Oakeshott, said “Whatever the excuses, it just looks terrible”.
Perhaps terrible should be replaced with “fiddle”!
