Yesterdays Gazette confirmed my post of 4th February http://thenorthernherald.blogspot.com/2008/02/rumour-mill.html that employees of the Council have rejected a pay equality deal by 48%.
By dangling a financial carrot in front of certain workers, the Council hoped that increased pay awards would allow the vote to tip in their favour. However, they forgot about that little referred to concept that still exists in the work place; solidarity.
So after six years of prevarication and a year’s negotiation, it’s back to the drawing board for the Council and the Unions. Perhaps this time they should actually listen to what their employees and members have to say.
