If you are of a certain age group, the books of Sue Townsend will bring back good memories. Who can forget the exploits of Adrian Mole (Diaries), the poor old Queen living in a Council house (The Queen and I) of the Blairesque PM wandering the country dressed as a woman(No 10). Ms Townsend must have known she had finally “arrived” in the literary world when the Private Eye immortalised her work in the parody “The Secret Diary of John Major 47 and ¾”.
Satire can be defined as “a literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit”. It is an approach which I regularly use on this site, and it is one which is generally well received. It was therefore with great mirth that I followed a link highlighted in a comment attached to one of my posts http://thenorthernherald.blogspot.com/2008/03/i-say-old-boy.html. Our dear, in the great political tradition of British humour and satire adopted by the likes of Spitting Image, Private Eye, Not The None O’clock News, Have I got News For You et al (the list is endless such is our zeal and desire to castigate ourselves) somebody has set up a blog diary with the title “Cllr Adrian Potts”! The similarities between said Adrian Potts and the antics of a certain Conservative councillor in South Tyneside are uncanny. Here is the pre amble to the site:
“Hi there bloggers. Potts is the name, and being a politician is the game.I am really lucky to be a Conservative Councillor on Darling South Borough Council - now my ambition is to be an MP.”
Clearly Councillor David Potts (Cleadon and East Boldon Ward, South Tyneside Council) and Cllr Adrian Potts are twin’s co existing in parallel universes.
I must admit I have been waiting for the backlash. The site does have an uncanny similarity in timing re certain issues that I have covered (not all relating to Councillor David Potts). However, any wagging of fingers will be a waste of time and any accusations will be vehemently laughed at – I don’t control the site, I don’t know who controls the site and I don’t know who writes for it!
So there you have it – South Tyneside’s first purely satirical political blog.
Will I visit it – of course I will, its funny. Will other people visit – of course they will, its funny. Will there be any repercussions – not for me, but I suspect a certain Labour Chancellor will be making notes!

Well worth a read, keep it up Adrian and you could find yourself in Private ops I meant the public eye!
It's been removed.
So much for free speech, eh?
Now you see it, now you don’t. Censorship. Somebody’s been had – and it wasn’t Pandora!
WAS it BRENDA OR Iain Malcolm
The plot thickens.
I wonder if Adrian Potts also goes by the name of Brenda?
I’m disappointed I didn’t get to see that. I’m going to have to invest in a computer one of these days.
I read it - very funny. It made me chuckle.
Sorry Ahmed you are way off the mark but two down one to go is nearer the mark, yes it was one of the Chuckle Brothers.
BRENDA SAID, AHMED WILL NOT WIN THE ELECTION ? HA HA HA HA
